How We Price

Every price on Know Your Collection comes from the same data behind MyPlayersVault. Here's where it comes from, what each number means, and what it can't tell you.

Where the prices come from

We show the same prices as MyPlayersVault. Values are read from recent eBay and PriceCharting sales and update over time. Every figure is shown in pounds sterling, whatever the region.

A price here is a typical recent selling price, not an offer to buy or sell. Any single copy can sell for more or less depending on its condition, the seller and the day.

Sealed and used, always side by side

Sealed is a new copy still in its original factory seal. Used is complete in box — case, manual and disc or cartridge. We never squeeze these into one “condition” figure, because they behave differently: a drop in one rarely means a drop in the other.

Sealed can be blank on purpose. When there isn't a real sealed market for a game, MyPlayersVault doesn't show a sealed value, and neither do we. When we don't have a reliable price, we show “—”. We never show £0 for a price we don't have.

Every region priced on its own

The same game released in different regions is treated as a different item, because it usually is — a separate print run, box and set of buyers. We track three regions:

  • UK/PAL — the UK, Europe and Australia.
  • NTSC-U — North America.
  • NTSC-J — Japan, together with the wider Asian releases we group with it.

How we decide something is a price drop

Price drops are measured on the daily PriceCharting price guide, because it has a price for every game every day. A game appears in This Week's Price Drops when its sealed or used guide price is at least 10% and £2 lower than a week earlier, the game costs £10 or more, and it sells often enough for its price to be trustworthy.

Price guides sometimes jump for a few weeks and then return to normal. We leave out “drops” that are really a price going back to its usual level after a short-lived spike, so the list shows genuine falls.

New releases

Release dates come from the same price guide and are listed per region. Upcoming dates can move. A brand-new game shows “No price yet” until enough copies have sold to give a reliable figure.

What our prices can't tell you

  • The condition of a specific copy — a damaged box or missing manual changes what it's worth.
  • Whether a “sealed” copy has been resealed.
  • What a game will be worth next year. Prices go down as well as up. Collector context, not financial advice.

Prices and links to shops

Prices are shown the same way whether or not a shop we link to pays us a commission. See our affiliate disclosure.
